Awa odori festival

Aug 14, 2010

We went to the Awa odori festival yesterday, as promised.
The festival was grand and it was heavily packed with people...literally everywhere! To tell you the truth, this is the one and only time we get to see so many people in Tokushima. Believe me.

There were a few stages for the Awa odori performance. It is sort of a ritual for the dancers to hop from one stage to another stage. To the viewers, we can either buy a ticket to watch the stage performance or if you like hopping from one place to another, just join the crowd and walk around as you wish, which was pretty much the idea we had in mind that day.

We cycled to the city center, which was about 20 minutes by bicycle. Bicycle is the best mode of transportation during this festive season since a few roads would be closed and it would be difficult to get parking too.

Sya in Jinbei...Japanese traditional wear.

Many different designs of Yukata representing different ren (team)

Gold fish scooping, a popular activity during festive seasons in Japan

Estimated hundreds of stalls were set up, serving food and games

Maybe because we were fasting, we realized we didn't get the essence of the Awa odori festive atmosphere from yesterday's photos. We were quite shocked to discover that most of the photos we took were of food! Cheh...mentang mentang puasa katakan.

So sharing you below are a few pictures taken during the past Awa odori festival.

Takoyaki anyone?

2010 Awa odori festival

Aug 12, 2010

It's Japanese Obon holiday starting from today til the weekend.
Obon is one of the most important Japanese traditions. People believe that their ancestors' spirits come back to their homes to be reunited with their family during Obon and pray for the spirits. For the reason, Obon is an important family gathering time, and many people return to their hometowns.

In Tokushima, Awa Dance festival is held as part of the Obon festival. It is the largest dance festival in Japan, attracting over 1.3 million tourists every year. Groups of choreographed dancers and musicians known as ren dance through the streets, typically accompanied by the shamisen (lute), taiko (drums), shinobue (flute) and the kane (bell). Performers wear traditional obon dance costumes and sing as they parade through the streets.

We are planning to join the festival tomorrow. Will show you how grand the festival is in my next input. For the meantime, do bear with the pictures of my break fast menu today. Selamat berbuka puasa!

1st Ramadhan

It is the first day of Ramadhan today and it happened to be my hubby's birthday. Ramadhan is a special month of the year for Muslims throughout the world. It is a time for inner reflection, devotion to God, and self-control.

Below are our simple menu for today's break fast/ birthday celebration. My break fast menu is usually simple as pasar Ramadhan is not available in Japan. But then again, break fasting is not about having feast, it should be 'sederhana' which also means we should not be spending money lavishly on food or drinks. Selamat berbuka puasa!

Camping at Iyakei valley

Aug 11, 2010

So...we were back camping. Camping for the last time before the Ramadhan starts. We initially thought we couldn't make it to this camp when my son contracted chicken pox ten days ago. But Alhamdulillah, his symptoms were quite light and his recovery was speedy. He recovered in one week time! Just in time for the beach outing and this camp.

So, where is this Iyakei? Iyakei is situated in the western part of Tokushima and nearly in the center of Shikoku. The Iya area is one of the three large "hidden mountain regions" in Japan, forming a part of Mt. Tsurugi Quasi-National Park. The region is surrounded by mountains in the Shikoku Mountain district, with a deep valley formed among the mountains cut through by the limpid Iya-gawa River, a tributary of the Yoshino-gawa River. So to cut short the story, we will be camping in the middle of the mountains.

The weather was forecast to be bright and sunny. However when we reached the campsite, it was a little cloudy and we could see dark clouds hovering just above our campsite. Ahh...mountain weather is unpredictable. There is a chance we'll be camping in the rain. But then again, if we want to enjoy nature...these are part and parcel we will have to accept. We are all ready for this!

So as what we had expected, it started to rain heavily. My hubby was in the middle of setting up the tent when it started to rain. Looking at the bright side, at least the inner part of the tent was not wet and we did not have to sleep in wet bed....hahaha. About an hour later, the dark cloud above us decided to move further north and the weather was sunny again! Yay!

After securing our tent, we decided to walk down the hill for a swim in the clean Iya river. The water was clear and cold...which gave the nice cooling effect just fit for this hot summer. The big and small stones provided us some mild reflexology effect which was quite soothing. Ah...I just enjoy this feeling.

We walked back to our campsite after a good two-hour swim. It's time for some cooking. We decided to cook something simple this time. The main dish was salmon pie with some grilled lamb chop and some grilled vegetables as side dishes. I used the dutch oven for the pie but was unsure how it would turn out as this was my first time baking pie outdoor.

While waiting for the salmon pie to bake, we managed to grill the lamb ribs and veges. The dinner was pretty much ready by the time the grilling completed.

How did the pie turn out? It was definitely a success! Just look at the crispy crust and the juicy salmon with creamy mushroom to complement it. It was delicious!

We finished our dinner before the sunset. We cleaned the place thoroughly making sure there was no trace of food around us as we didn't want to lure any unexpected animals to our tent site. The friendly warden ensure us no big bears appear here. He said he's seen wild boars, monkeys, big deers and Japanese serow, which is a protected species. Still, we never know.

Enjoying the pitch black night, watching the exceptionally bright stars, listening to the flowing river and endless cicada sound. It was a peaceful feeling. I didn't remember what time I slept but I slept soundly while listening to the music supplied by nature in that cool and chilly night.

The next day, we were awaken by soft morning glow with birds chirping away. It was another fine day.

Greetings from Optimus prime.

The camp warden

After a simple breakfast, we packed our things and headed to the river again for another swim.

A great escapade, free from daily, boring, routine work! Wooohoooooo.....*scream*
I am recharged and refreshed!
I am now all ready for more bashing, more stress and endless experiments! Bring it on!

Last but not least, I would like to take this opportunity to wish all my Muslim friends happy fasting and may this year's Ramadhan be of better quality than the past's. Amin~

Lab outing

Aug 9, 2010

We had our yearly lab outing last week. We went to the Kitanowaki beach, which is situated about 100km south from the Tokushima city.
Our professor booked a Umi no ie (Japanese beach house), which not only provided a resting place but also served some simple lunch. Do you know how Japanese beach house looks like? Below are a few pictures of Japanese traditional beach house.

Umi no ie is basically a simple looking stall located by the beach, which only opens for two months. They are opened from early July to late August. Some "Umi-no-ie" expect to earn a one-year revenue only for two months.

We rented a place at Fukunaga beach house.

You can also rent floats or boats for a reasonable price.

Nice open view from the beach house. Below are some examples of food they had served us.

Boiled shrimp and edamame

Takoyaki

Kakigori (flavored ice)

We had a great time. We were blessed with great weather, good food and nice people. Do drop by and enjoy Japanese beach when you come to Japan. It surely is an experience you wouldn't want to miss.

Orange chiffon cake

Aug 3, 2010

My hubby complained the other day.
'I have gained one kilo this week! Oh my diet...' He exclaimed after getting down from the digital weighing scale.
'Huhu...are you blaming me dear?" I asked, jokingly.
'No la...you know I have been eating oats in the morning just to lose some more pounds. I have been gaining weight instead...a little frustrated.' He said.
'Ok...ok, the baking thing will stop temporarily after this.'
'Not after you bake my chocolate banana cake...hehehe' He requested cheekily.

My hubby who wants to lose weight requested for a chocolate cake. Shiish...what la, I thought.
So I checked for the ingredients on the shelf and found out that the essential material, the cocoa powder was not enough for my recipe.
Hmm...I have to disappoint my hubby today, I thought.
Then I browsed the internet and came across a yummy looking Orange chiffon cake.

Chiffon cake is known to be a tricky. I heard people complained that it may look nice and fluffy in the oven...when you take it out, wooosh...it just deflates! But the picture looked so good so I decided to give it a challenge.
And it turned out...soft and fluffy! Yoohoo! I did it.
It definitely was the fluffiest cake I have ever made...no joke about it.
Don't believe it? See it for yourself...:)

My hubby who was not so crazy about chiffon cake (the reason for me not trying baking chiffon cake too) was a little disappointed. I asked him why he's not crazy over chiffon cake. He said that the chiffon cake he had tried was dry, plain and just 'tak sedap'.

So I tossed him a piece anyway. He tried, and finished it.
Then he came and asked for a second helping.
'Shiish...sombong kata tak sedap tapi makan dua pinggan...', I said.
' Ala...sedap pulak kek yang awak buat ni...', he admitted the cake was 'quite nice'. Inside me I was laughing...I managed to change his bad habit of making assumptions. hahaha. It is definitely a good start to some changes...
So, here is the cake, one of the ways to eat it...with fresh whipped cream. It surely enhanced the taste of chiffon cake. If you happen to think like my hubby, do brave up and give it a try~

Caramel pudding

Aug 2, 2010

Stayed at home, watched Toy story 3 two times with my son. Still managed to cry the second time. It was definitely a movie anyone should watch. It reminded me of my childhood. And it would pretty much have the same effect with everyone else. I don't want to be a spoiler, so I'll stop here. Go, go...go watch Toy story 3!

Sharing you today's tea, caramel pudding. It's my son and hubby's favorite.
